The choice of Vessels for the YVR CLIPPER Fleet has been extensively researched considering the following.
  • Having analyzed (and learned) from previous operators.
  • Calculations of Fuel Burn / Seat / Mile.
  • Payload demand and a a 5 year projection thereof.
  • Cost of Maintenance versus propulsion & drive method.
  • Dispatch Reliability.
  • Sea Keeping capabilities considering safety, comfort & economics.
  • Size of Vessel versus fixed cost of Moorage & Docking Fees.
  • Variable Operating costs.

  • Utilizing proven technologies on existing Vessels and acquiring & utilizing such Vessels currently in operational condition - into the Fleet. Example. The Hydrofoil has a proven & efficient past. YVRCLIPPER would upgrade such vessel with (more) efficient engines & upgrade systems to the latest and required standards for a fraction the cost of a new vessel able to move 120 Passengers at 32 Kts.

CON’S
-Passenger Discomfort starts at 0.5M seas.
-Drive & Engine Maintenance Expensive (“high speed’ diesels)
-Not great in inclement weather.
-Wake Issues to be considered.
-Night Operations should have an additional look out on the bridge, or operate at slower speed.
-High Purchase Price for New $1M & Up

-Speed: 28-30 Kts

-Stable & Comfortable.
-Good in inclement weather.
-Lots of Room - Passenger Comfort.
-Shallow Draft, Short Length, Big Beam.

CON’S
-High Maintenance Cost.
-Fuel Burn higher then CAT-3 (Hydrofoil).
-Wake Issues to be considered, including Noise.
-Requires expensive spare parts (eg. Jet Drives).
-High Crew Overhead (in particular if 2 decks).
-Expensive. Used $2.5 M +

-HYDROFOIL Design (Kometa - B or Katran Class)
-Payload 120-140 Passengers
-Speed: 30-32 Kts

-Very Fast & Efficient (a true 30 Kt vessel).
-Lower Crew Cost compared to CAT-2.
-Better Fuel Economy compared to CAT-2.
-No Wake or Noise Issues.
-Comfortable.
-Low Maintenance & Operating Cost (standard Engines / Shafts / Props).
-Easy to Upgrade to latest required standards.
-Low Acquisition Cost $350K and Up.


CON’S
-Does not like beam seas over 1.5 M.
-Foils (the Wings) are expensive to replace.
-Deep Draft when not on Foils (13’).
-Without Special Certification - Day Time operations only.
-Requires a sharp, diligent & good look-out / bridge crew (hard to find).
